No referral needed at PVT hospitals for CGHS beneficiaries

Gurgaon, January 07, 2013
The New Year has brought more cheer to about 80,000 beneficiaries of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) in the city as they are now not required to procure a referral letter from a senior authority to avail facilities at private centres.  In an order dated January 1, VP Singh, deputy secretary of the ministry of health and family welfare, states, “It has now been decided that CGHS beneficiaries shall herein after be allowed to undergo investigations at private hospitals/diagnostic laboratories/imaging centres empanelled under CGHS after specific investigations have been advised by a CGHS medical officer or a government specialist without requirement of any other referral letter.” [click here to see the order]
Sanjeev Saxena, president of CGHS Beneficiaries Welfare Association, Gurgaon, said, “This is definitely a boon for all the beneficiaries as people had to make many rounds from the dispensary to the private hospital only for a referral letter. But now, it is going to be much easier for us.”  In November last year, the deputy secretary of the health ministry had passed an order that allowed beneficiaries to avail medical facilities under the scheme with only one referral letter which was valid for six months. The January 1 order also states that the investigations shall be performed on a cashless basis for pensioners, ex-Members of Parliament, freedom fighters and other categories, which are eligible for credit facility. The original prescription and bills will have to be submitted to competent authorities.
Besides, the dispensary timings too have been changed. Now, CGHS dispensaries will function from 9am to 4pm. [click here to see]
