Subject: Revision of Income Ceilings for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Low Income Group (LIG) —reg.




1. Background:

Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation determines the income ceiling of the urban poor categorized as Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Lower Income Group (LIG) households. The monthly income ceilings for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Low Income Group (LIG) households are presently fixed at Rs.5000/- and Rs.5001/10,000 (based on 2008 prices and effective since March 2010).
2. Revision of Income Ceiling:
For realignment of the ceilings reflecting growth in the income and expenditure levels and increase in cost of housing, a fresh assessment has been carried out based on 6 authentic parameters namely: CPI: consumer price index, CFPI: consumer food price index, PCI: growth in per capita income and RESIDEX: NHB’s property price tracking index (that replaced Cost of Construction Index, CCI), MWAG: min wages for non-Agricultural Workers and MPCE: monthly per capita expenditure.
3. Based on these parameters, and as recommended by the Steering Committee of the 1ST-RIP scheme,, it has been decided with.the.approval of competent authority to increase the income limits/ceilings with respect to EWS and LIG as under:

For EWS: Rs.1,00,000/- as household income per annum

For LIG: Rs.1,00,001 to 2,00,000/- as household income per annum.

4. Applicability:
The revised income ceilings will be applicable with immediate effect.
