The details of the scheme being implemented by Government for providing education to single girl child in the country:

Scheme for single girl child

Will the Minister of HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT be pleased to satate :-

(a) the details of the scheme being implemented by Government for providing education to single girl child in the country;
(b) the amount allocated and incurred under the schemes during the last three years and current year;
(c) whether Government is continuing the Indira Gandhi Fellowship for promoting post-graduation to single girl child;
(d) if so, the amount allocated for this programme during the last two academic years, current academic year and for 2015-16; and
(e) whether Government has not finalised the selection of the candidates and has not released the fellowship during the current financial year and if so, the reasons therefor?

(a) & (b): The University Grants Commission (UGC) has informed that it is implementing “Post-Graduate (PG) Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child” scheme for supporting post-graduate education of such children in non-professional courses. Girl students who are twin daughters/ fraternal daughters are also eligible for applying under the scheme. A single girl child who has taken admission in the first year of a regular Masters Degree course in any recognized university or a post graduate college is eligible for applying under the scheme. PG courses in Distance Education mode are not covered under the scheme. The scholarship amount is Rs.2,000/- per month for a period of two years, for 10 months per year, and there is no limit on number of girl students to be considered under these scholarships. The amounts disbursed by the UGC, under this scheme, during the last three years and the current year are as below:

*There are no fixed slots under this scheme.

The UGC has also started Swami Vivekanand Single Girl Child Scholarship scheme in 2014-15 for research in social sciences. The guidelines of the scheme are at http://www.ugc.ac.in/pdfnews/ 0003922_guidelines-SWAMI-Vivekananda.pdf . The scheme is applicable to a single girl child who has taken admission in regular, full-time Ph.D program in Social Sciences in any recognized University/Institute. Ph.D. Courses in Distance Education mode are not covered under the scheme. The scholarship amount is Rs.8,000/- per month for first two years and Rs.10,000/- per month for third and fourth year, extendable to fifth year in exceptional circumstances. The selection of candidates, under this scheme, for 2014-15 has been finalized by the UGC.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) awards scholarships to single girl child students who have passed class Xth examination with 60% or more marks, from a school affiliated to CBSE, for continuing their further education in class XIth and XIIth in a school, affiliated to CBSE, where monthly fees does not exceed Rs.1500/-. A sum of Rs.6000/- per year is awarded to each scholar and there is no limit the on number of girl students eligible for consideration under these scholarships.

The details of the scholarships given by CBSE under this scheme during the last three years and the current year, are as under:

Further, the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” scheme, has been launched to promote survival, protection and education of girl child, including single girl child. This scheme is a joint initiative of Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Human Resource Development.
(c): Yes, Sir. The UGC is continuing the Indira Gandhi scholarship scheme for promoting post-graduation of single girl child.
(d): The amount allocated by the UGC for this programme during the last two academic years, current academic year and for 2015-16 is as below:

(e): No, Sir. The UGC has reported that the selection for the current year 2014-15 has been finalized and the list of selected candidates has been uploaded on 18th February, 2015 at www.ugc.ac.in . Further, the award letters to selected students have been uploaded and are being accessed by them. The UGC has already transferred the Indira Gandhi scholarship scheme funds to the Canara Bank for disbursal through Direct Benefit Transfer mode.
