Short Service Commission Officers

Will the Minister of
DEFENCE be pleased to state:-

(a) the current service period for Short Service Commission officers along with the rationale behind fixing the existing period;

(b) the current shortage of men and women in the armed forces;

(c) whether there is a policy to increase or decrease the service period of the Short Service Commission officers and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the Government plan to extend the benefits of pension or other benefits to help them ease into civil society by finding employment; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

ANSWER

MINISTER OF STATE (RAO INDERJIT SINGH)
IN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

(a): Tenure of Short Service Commissioned (SSC) Officers is from 10 years to 14 years. The existing tenure has been fixed to address the shortage of trained young officer.

(b): The details of shortage of officers in the Armed Forces are as under:-
Army (as on 1.7.2015)
Navy (as on 31.10.2015)
Air Force (as on 1.11.2015)

Women officers are part of the officersโ€™ cadre and no separate cadre exists for them.

(c): There is no proposal to increase or decrease the service period of the Short Service Commission Officers.

(d) & (e): Measures to extend more benefits and attractiveness of SSC are regularly examined and implemented from time to time. Such measures are also aimed at helping Short Service Commissioned Officers, in easy transition into a second career and resettlement after completion of their service period.
